Every Season is Tiger Season

For homecoming, the students were asked to come up with an idea for a poster that had something to do with this year's theme - Every Season is Tiger Season. Our class and Mrs. Little's class teamed up to make our poster. The kids came up with the idea, drew the poster, colored it, and even helped laminate it!

Our poster won 2nd place - out of the whole school system!!! Way to go, Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Little's classes!!!

Homecoming

Grandparent's Day Celebration

We celebrated Grandparent's Day at RES today. We had many grandparents and grand-friends join us to celebrate! We loved having them and hope they come back to visit anytime!!

Here's our tribute to our grandparents:

We recited a poem and sang a song that we've been practicing for our grandparents.

We interviewed our grandparents and learned about things from when they were younger.

We also worked with our grandparents to draw a picture of something we like to do together. We hung it in the hall on our Grandparent's Day Quilted Memories quilt.

Thanks for coming, grandparents and grand-friends! We enjoyed our time with you and welcome you back anytime!!

Making Pies

I so enjoyed my visit to with my kids last Thursday!! I miss each of them and it was so great to see them, even if it was only for a few minutes! Thanks for my cards - they are so sweet!

Good morning, kiddos!
Happy New Year! I hope you had a great Christmas break!
I know you were probably surprised this morning to see a new teacher greet in our classroom. I wanted to let you know all about what's going on with me and Baby Avery Claire. My blood pressure has been high at my doctor's visits, so my doctor thinks it will be best for Avery Claire if I stay home from work and rest until she gets here.
I want each one of you to know that I will miss you so much!! Mrs. Swinney is very excited to be with you - I have really bragged on you and what a great group of students you are! You are great listeners and you always try so hard. I also told her that if you guys couldn't answer her questions, nobody could! I know that each of you will be on your very best behavior while she's with you. She knows all about what goes in our classroom, and I know you'll do your best to be helpful. I will talk with her often to see how things are going.
I'd love for you to keep in touch! Write me a letter or send me an email if you can! If you give a letter to Mrs. Swinney, I'll bet she can find a way to get it to me! We can be pen pals!!
I'll write on the blog occasionally and let her know when to let all of you see it. I'll definitely post pictures of Miss Avery Claire when she arrives!

Here's our Christmas tree, with some of our handmade ornaments on it.

We kicked off our Christmas breakfast with a singing treat from two of our classmates. Thank you, Kyleigh and Lindsey!! You did a wonderful job!!

Of course, I forgot to take a group picture, and most of the kiddos had left by the time I thought about it. I managed a couple of pictures of those who were posing for their parents.

By the time Matevious was still, we'd lost Braiden.

It's that time of year!!

I know some of you have been wondering about our Christmas party...look for a note in your child's binder today. Here's the info:

Ornament Day: We will be having an ornament day one day this week. We will be making three different ornaments in three different classrooms. We'll be having a classroom swap (probably Wednesday or Thursday) with two other 3rd grade teachers, and we'll make a different ornament in each class. If you could send $2 for this cause, it'd be greatly appreciated!!! This will cover the cost of supplies needed for this event~

Gift Swap Party: We will be having our gift swap party on Thursday, December 17th. I am asking that each child bring $1 gift by Tuesday, December 15th. Please don't send gifts that cost more than $1 - we'll be putting the gifts under the tree and each child will pick a gift to open.

Christmas Breakfast: We will be having Christmas Breakfast on Friday, December 18th at 8:00. Parents are invited to attend. For $1, your child will get a biscuit, milk, and juice. This money will come out of your child's lunch account, just like he or she was eating breakfast at school on a regular day. I would like to have a few other treats at our breakfast. Please let me know if you'd be willing to help out with providing those. There will be a form for you to fill out and return to me.

I know it seems like I just keep asking for $ and I know it's a not an easy time of year to keep sending money to school. It's just takes a little $ to have our Christmas fun at school! I really appreciate your help and support - I couldn't do it without you!!!!

Toyland & Gameday

THURSDAY
As I'm sure you know, the Golden Tigers will be playing in the state championship game this Thursday night at 7:00 at Bryant Denney Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Because of this awesome event, there will be some changes to our school days Thursday and Friday.
- We will still be going on our field trip Thursday to see Toyland. We will leave at 8:30 and return to school by 12:00 to eat lunch.
- School will dismiss Thursday at 1:00. All students must be picked up by 1:15. Please be on time to pick up your child if he or she is a car rider - we all want to head to Tuscaloosa!! If your child is a bus rider, he or she will leave around 12:40-12:45.
- There will be no T.R.A.C.K.S. or Chucky Mullins after school Thursday.
- If you plan on checking your child out Thursday, please do it before 12:00. We should be back by then.
- If your child will be going home a different way than usual Thursday, please send me a note Wednesday or Thursday and let me know how your child is getting home!
- There will be a Walk of Champions to welcome the Golden Tigers to Bryant Denney @ 5:15 Thursday. Be there to support our football team!

FRIDAY
- School will begin at 9:00 because those who go to the game will have a late night Thursday. Buses will run an hour later Friday.
- There will be no breakfast served at school Friday.

All Thursday checkouts and Friday absences will be excused!!!!

We're practicing our cursive by writing some Thanksgiving words.

Reading Stations

We thought we'd let you see what we've started doing during reading! We've started a station rotation during our small group reading time each day.
Here are the rules we must remember as we work each day...

When we start Stations each day, we go get our station binder. It has our books and passages that we've been reading this week in it.

This is our Skills station. Here we work with our group on our weekly skill. This week we've worked on making generalizations. Last week, we worked on drawing conclusions. Ask your child if he or she can tell you what either of these mean!!

Here's our reread station. Here, we reread a book or passage that we've read this week at our table meeting (with me, Mrs. Davis). Sometimes, we highlight words that have the weekly skill, like -ly, -ness, -ful, and -less suffixes.

At our Seatwork station, we usually work on spelling skills.

Thanks for taking an interest in what's going on in our classroom. We want you to be involved, so we like showing you what we're up to every day!

Station Binders

We are implementing new stations in our 3rd grade classrooms, and each child needs a station binder. I would prefer a 1/2 inch to 1 inch binder (anything else is too big). Please let your child pick out any binder they want - I want them to be able to recognize it (even if we just decorate it with stickers). It doesn't have to be a plain binder.
*If you are able to buy more than one binder, it would be greatly appreciated. If you have any old binders at home that no one uses, we can use those, too. Each child needs a station binder - we can decorate them to make them our own!*
Thanks so much for your help and cooperation! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it!

Pumpkins, Please?!

I am planning a continents project with pumpkins, but we are in need of pumpkins!! If you could possibly send any small (the cute little bitty) pumpkins, I would really appreciate it!! I'm hoping to at least get 9 (so we can pair up), but if I could get 19 (one for every student), that'd be awesome!!! We need them by the end of this week or beginning of next week.
*Someone told me these little pumpkins were for sale (at a good price) at Northside Grocery. I haven't looked there yet, but just thought I'd let you know that!* --- I checked with Northside - they have 50 cent pumpkins!!!!!

Field Trip

I apologize for the delay in field trip pictures! I was a little under the weather last week, but feeling much better.

Here we are waiting on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to start. It was a 3-D movie - we didn't just wear those cool glasses to the theater because they were so cute!

And here we are at Chuck E. Cheese. Boy, did we have fun eating pizza and cashing in those tickets!!

We had such a good time and everyone was so well-behaved! I'd take this crew anywhere with me!

Worms, Penguins, and Bar Graphs

We spent some time this week with worms! Yes, the real kind! We observed night crawlers and discussed their bodies, their slimy skin and how they breathe. And like all good scientists do, we recorded our observations...

We also spent time discussing and making bar graphs. We collected data from our classmates and made bar graphs to represent our data.

We read this great story this week called Penguin Chick. We learned a lot about penguins, and to wrap our penguin week up, what better movie to watch than Happy Feet?!

If you would like to chaperone the October 1st field trip, please have your child's form turned in by Thursday. We will put names in a hat and draw one chaperone to accompany us to the movie.
Remember: Any chaperone can meet us at Chucky Cheese -we are just limited to the number that we can take into the movie theater.

Penguin Chick, Book Order, and Field Trip

Your child brought home a field trip letter Friday (if he or she was there after P.E.). We are going to see the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and then we're heading to Chucky Cheese. The cost of the trip is $18, which covers the bus fare, the movie, popcorn and a drink at the movie, 2 slices of pizza and a drink at Chucky Cheese, and $3 in tokens. Money is due no later than September 28th.

The Incredible, Edible Cell

We have been learning about cells in 3rd grade...we've learned about some of the parts of cells and their functions. Friday, we made edible cells.

Some of us made plant cells. We know that they're more rectangular in shape and they have a cell wall, a cell membrane, cytoplasm (the blue stuff), a nucleus (the control center), ribosomes (the cell's DNA), and chloroplasts (these contain chlorophyll, and that's why plants are green!).

Animal cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, a nucleus, and ribosomes. They do not have chloroplasts (which is why we're not green!).

We made a big mess and probably came home Friday with blue fingers, but we had a lot of fun and I can tell we've learned a lot about plant and animal cells!

Don't forget:

Cell Projects are due this Friday!!! You choose whether to make a plant or animal cell...look at the guidelines and be creative!

2009 Farm-City State Poster Contest
The Alabama Farm-City poster and essay theme for 2009 is "Farmers Care - For Animals and You." This year's theme supports the National Farm-City Committee's new strategy of addressing one potentially divisive issue each year. In selecting animal care as the 2009 national focus, the Committee acknowledged that providing a forum for discussion of this issue is consistent with the Farm-City mission of cultivating greater understanding among rural and urban residents.The care of farm animals is an often misunderstood topic that can result in emotional debate among individuals, members of the media and elected officials. This year's poster and essay theme will give students a chance to learn more about the steps farmers take to make sure they raise healthy animals and produce safe food for our families.As with past poster and essay themes, "Farmers Care - For Animals and You" also gives students a chance to explore the interdependence of farms and cities. Although our food supply begins with farmers providing food, water, shelter and medical care for their animals, the chain also includes transportation, processing and even cooking.The theme gives students freedom to use their imaginations as they explore the relationship between farm and city with a special focus on the way farmers care for their animals and our food.The contest is sponsored by the Farm-City Committee of Alabama, P.O. Box 11000, Montgomery, AL 36191-0001, in cooperation with Alabama Ag in the Classroom. Eligibility and Rules:
Entry is open to all students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade and must be the original work of the student.
There are two categories of competition: K - 3 grades and 4 - 6 grades. First and Second Place winners will be named in each category.
Posters must relate to the theme.
Posters must be on display during the month of November in a shopping mall, library, retail businesses or other place of public view.
The size should be horizontal with the length no greater than 28 inches and height no greater than 22 inches. It should be no smaller than 14 inches in length and 11 inches high. Standard thickness poster paper is preferred. (Vertical posters will be judged but NOT considered for the calendar due to format requirements.)
Any flat medium can be used such as pen and pencil, crayon, watercolor, ink, oil, but no three-dimensional posters such as gluing products on to a poster will be eligible.
Each student is required to complete an information form and attach it to each poster entry. (Click Here For Information Form)
All entries will be judged first at the County Farm-City Committee level with the first place winner in each county being submitted to the State Farm-City Committee. One entry per division, per county may be submitted for judging at the state level.
Criteria for judging include: creativity, originality, neatness, overall appearance and relevance to the theme.
Deadline for entry at the state level is March 1, 2010. Winners will be notified by mail no later than April 1. Award winners will be announced at the state Farm-City Awards Luncheon in April.
Entries become the property of the Farm-City Committee of Alabama and may be photographed or reproduced in a calendar or any other publication as the Committee sees fit without further permission or monetary consideration.

Happy Grandparent's Day

We celebrated Grandparent's Day at school Friday morning, and we had a big crowd!! We said a poem and sang a song for our grandparents. Then, we had refreshments while our grandparents watched a slideshow of pictures we'd brought in of us with them.

After that, we interviewed our grandparents. You should have seen the shocked faces when some grandparents said,"Buy milk?! We didn't buy milk! We milked the cow!" Or, "TV?! We didn't have TVs!!" These kiddos couldn't have made it 'back then.'

We made a quilt piece that represents something important to us and our grandparents. It's hanging in our hallway and I'll try to get a picture of it this week to post.

Scholastic Book Club Info

I will be sending home Scholastic book orders tomorrow. These are for the month of September and will be due September 21st. I wanted to give you some info about book orders/Scholastic before you get the order forms.

- Our classroom receives points for books that you buy. Therefore, the more you order, the more I can order for our classroom library.

-You do not have to order books. I is completely up to you and your child. Scholastic simply offers great prices on great books, and our classroom can be rewarded for books that you buy.

- You must fill out the order form on the back of the order booklet (unless you order online).

- You must pay with a check; you cannot pay with cash.

- We must have a minimum purchase amount as a class (I think it's $25) to place an order, otherwise I have to pay shipping out-of-pocket.

- NEW for parents- You can order online this year!! (And every time you order online, I get to pick a free book for our classroom!) So, if you'd rather use a debit/credit card, this is the way to go!

You can shop online by page number, by specials, or by order form.

Snowball

We've been reviewing even and odd #s, so Friday was played a little game called "Snowball" to help us review. The kids wrote even or odd beside a line of numbers, crumpled up their papers and let it snow...can you see the "snowballs" covering the rug?

Then, each student grabbed a "snowball to check the answers. We repeated this several times. It's amazing how fun the kids think it is to be able to crumple up their work! They loved playing "Snowball!"

Our story next week is Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday. This is one of my favorite stories!

Some rules you might need to know when studying:

Are You Ready for Some Football?

WE ARE!!!!
The Golden Tigers had their jamboree game Friday night, so we spent our art time Friday making football players and cheerleaders to put on display in the 3rd grade hallway.

Our first two weeks of school have been awesome! I'm so impressed by how well everyone listens and how hard everyone tries!

If you haven't noticed, I've added a couple of things to the sidebar of the blog so you can be informed as to what events are coming up and what tests to make sure your child is ready for!!

3rd grade has been busy so far!

Our first week of 3rd grade has been awesome so far!! We've stayed very busy...

Here we are working on our "getting to know you" vests. They are hanging in our hallway if you're in the building sometime and want to take a look.

Today, we had a classroom scavenger hunt. Each student had to answer questions about our classroom, such as "Where are the tissues?" "Is there a globe in our classsroom?" "What is our room number?" We walked around with our clipboards and explored the classroom while we answered our questions.

We've compared the differences between rural, urban, and suburban areas. You should see more comparisons between these areas when your child brings home his/her papers next week. Ask them some questions about each of these types of areas!

I have been so impressed my well-behaved, smart 3rd graders! I'm looking forward to a great year!
